Speedy Breedy® is used as a screen in many applications in the hospital environment, such as parenteral nutrition, neonatal water, sterility and hygiene monitoring.

Speedy Breedy® is also used by pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and stem cell manufacturers.

Cleanliness and hygiene are priority areas within a healthcare environment, particularly as patients are often more at risk of infection and slower recovery rates than someone not requiring medical supervision. With current constrains and costs in hospital care, increased patient turnover is of paramount importance. The most effective technique for controlling nosocomial infection is to strategically implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control measures to health care sectors. Regularl monitoring and evaluating of cleaning ptotocols can be of huge benefit.

Conventional methods of microbial testing can take days to yield results. If samples are to be sent to an external laboratory, there is a risk of compromising the sample during transport. Though adenosine triphosphate (ATP) tests are widely used, several studies have highlighted many limitations in this technology, such as low sensitivity, poor repeatability, interference with the results when disinfectants and other substances are likely to be present as well as an inability to distinguish between dead and live bacteria. 

Speedy Breedy® is therefore the perfect portable option for healthcare professionals to carry out hygiene monitoring, though it is not a certified medical device. Speedy Breedy® generates results quickly and the “time to detection” correlates with degree of contamination. Speedy Breedy® can also be programmed by users with a Detection Time that equates to a known contamination level which represents an acceptable cut-off point or "safe screen" period, enabling users not to have to wait for the test to complete before taking action. In addition to being faster than conventional laboratory techniques, as well as highly sensitive, (Speedy Breedy® can identify the presence of a single E. coli cfu in 10.5 hours), Speedy Breedy® results are stored on an SD card, and will be automatically uploaded to a PC upon being connected via USB to the unit, providing a complete digital audit trail. Unlike other methods, Speedy Breedy® does not require a trained microbiologist to operate of translate the results. 

Parenteral nutrition is another area where Speedy Breedy® can be used to potentially reduce the risk of patient death. Currently cartain special nutritional formulations have a shelf life of approximately 7 days. The challenge is that laboratory results can take up to 14-21 days to be returned. This means that formulations are in fact being administered before confirmation that the product is “safe” to use. Even when expiry dates are longer than 7 days but less than 90 days, the product may still be administered prior to laboratory results being made available. In 2014 headlines broke within the UK, when suspected contaminated parenteral nutrition was the cause of several neo natal deaths. The MHRA suggests, “for products (terminally sterilised or aseptically prepared) with a shelf life of less than 90 days, it is accepted that the results from sterility test or media simulation may not need to be available or considered as part of the product release criteria”.

However, if test results could be obtained in less than 24 hours, there would be decreased risks associated with untested product, boosting confidence that the formulated product is in fact safe to release.  Speedy Breedy® makes this possible.
